3 Product Failures and 3 Product Successes that changed people life's forever!
Product Failures
1. Nintendo Virtual Boy
The virtual reality boy is an intro to VR world from Nintendo,
where they over promised and under delivered. Low resolution graphics, gameplay
console. The industry said it was ahead of its time. It made people motion
sick, worked only in one color, the genre of games that were good for 3D
atmosphere weren’t there. It would have been successful if there were
more games and colors which would have cost the consumer more than they have
paid for the conventional console. In order to bring down the cost they would
have to wait for the technology to catch up.
2. Fire Phone Amazon
It is phone which is high priced, no differentiation except two new features added firefly being the unique feature. When it comes to design it was heavy and bulky. Phone wasn’t connected to google app store and which had 1 million more apps. It could have prevented if they had more features and better design and collaborated with google which they would never do.
3. Google Glass
An AR world that promised a mixed world reality. It is a perfect
time, I would say as a customer to have launched the glass but no one knew why
they wanted to buy such an AR glass. There was no precise use case primarily,
it was expensive around $1500, and would you trust someone who is wearing this,
I would have no. Privacy concerns also clicking pictures of people without
consent is one among them. The failure could have been prevented if google
marketing was selling particular use cases and sell it to B2B companies first
and then jump into B2C market.
Successful Products
1. IPAD - Apple Tech.
Computer for everywhere concept was a consumer centric electronic
gadget giving consumer the power to speed up the process of working life people
and home owners and especially kids. While travelling they can send emails,
access spreadsheets, presentations, calendar management. Its natural
interaction and intuitiveness helped the customers play easily with them. It
had many use cases and clearly a consumer centric product which had a huge
marketing campaign before launching which added to get more traction for this
product.
2. Kindle - Amazon
Wireless connection, Sony’s USN Connection and taking advantage of
the eBook. It is out and out a consumer centric product. It is hard to carry
multiple books while you’re travelling or getting back from your workplace, and
the display which is safer than phone or iPad displays’. Price of e-book in one
click for $10 is one of the USP of the product.
3. Sony PlayStation
The launch of PS took anyone by shock to get from 3D to Gaming. It
had little competitors in the space and the gamers were hungry to play with the
increasing educated population. The Saga world is quite intuitive, Sony made
sure they will do their best to make sure customer enjoys gaming. Even though
PS 1 sold less units compared to PS2 but it did create the market wanting more
from Sony at that time where Xbox was a direct competitor for it.
